Sinnan Street carries over a century of everyday life, local memory, and cultural heritage. However, it has long been affected by indiscriminate parking and the accumulation of clutter, making it difficult for visitors to walk, stay, and engage with the area. As a result, the street’s local culture and stories have become harder to see. Responding to this street-level challenge while building shared understanding and consensus among local partners became the core focus of this project.
Sinnan Street brings together local partners in restoration, woodworking, music, and regenerative design, yet indiscriminate parking and disrupted pedestrian flow have long made its historic facades and street stories difficult to notice. With the principle of “street as brand, local partners as DNA” we define the brand as a shared set of feelings, language, and guiding actions, and developed a co-creation service model of Explore, Focus, Translate, and Open. Through participatory co-creation and interviews, residents’ key ideas were transformed into touchpoints that invite people to enter, stay, and experience cultural value through interaction.
In its first year, the project addressed the issue of indiscriminate parking under the theme “Imagining Our Street Life Together,” Drawing on the open spirit of PARK(ing) Day, the experience was shaped around three core actions: stroll, be attracted, stay. Residents created interactive spaces in front of their homes and shops to encourage visitors to approach and naturally pause. This shifted the use of the streetfront from parking to staying, and transformed behavior from passive viewing into conversation and sharing. This approach is replicable and can be extended to other streets as a co-creation model for neighborhood development.
Sinnan Street is approximately 230 meters long, with 14 households participating this year. Around 1,300 visitor interactions took place in front of participating homes and shops. The outcomes of the workshops and interviews were presented through an exhibition, which also featured a LEGO co-creation area and discussion cards, attracting about 1,000 visitors who viewed the exhibition and left feedback. Echoing the theme “Imagining Our Shared Street Life,” the project used gentle public engagement to gather ideas for future development, while also contributing to SDGs 4, 8, 11, 12, and 17.
On-site observation showed that average visitor dwell time increased from about 3 minutes to over 60 minutes, while illegal parking during opening hours decreased by around 80%. The street became more suitable for walking and resting, and cultural values that had previously been obscured became visible again. Annual results included 10 media features and approximately 2,500 participants, demonstrating steady public visibility and growing awareness of the issue.
As the project progressed, Sinnan Street evolved from a street occupied by clutter and parked vehicles, where its potential had gone largely unnoticed, into a place where people are willing to pause, talk, and share. Local participation and cultural visibility increased at the same time, steadily moving the street toward its vision of becoming an arts and culture street.
